{ the girls }

It was by sheer chance that my aunt stumbled upon an ad for a pumpkin patch at "The Girls", located near their home.

"The Girls" is a storefront, positioned in a strip mall, several doors down from "The Boys."

The Boys boasts itself to be a wonderful farmer's market, while The Girls is a charming shop featuring homemade ice cream, an old-fashioned soda fountain, and tons of cute gifts, including jams, jellies, candies and all kinds of things you might find at a country store.

However, should you happen to walk through the shop and out the back door, you'll find yourself in a really cool place.

The entire back of the strip mall is devoted to rescued birds, hydroponic gardening and charming scenery. You can pick strawberries, explore a fire truck, or search for the albino peacock.

Completely unexpected.

Turtle was not in a fabulous mood that day. It was closing in on naptime, and for some reason, the caged birds frightened him with their shrieks (macaws and cockatoos are not known for their indoor voices).

He was ok with these giant tortoises (the larger one's shell was easily three feet long).

And he was more than thrilled checking out this replica fire truck.

He also thought this old tractor was cool.

There were bunnies hopping around the entire area. Unfortunately, there were also some unruly children (not mine), chasing said bunnies, who took cover under a structure.

Turtle brought them some lettuce, which was readily available in big tubs around the property. Which I thought was darn awesome.

At about this point, cooperation went out the window so we thought we might wander through the shop for a moment.

Turtle spotted a lollipop that he asked for, and I let him have it, because he was trying so hard to hang in there, but his routine was all blown out of the water.

Nothing makes this child happier than a lollipop.

Unless it's candy corn. Or Toy Story.

But I digress.

I figured we had our chance, and herded him back into the pumpkin patch.

Suddenly? Those cawing birds weren't so intimidating.

We'll definitely come back to pick strawberries.

And we'll probably have to get him his own little chair like this.

Check out the size of that pumpkin!

Which was still smaller than THIS pumpkin! (Seriously. These were some giant gourds).

Happy Pumpkin Picking!

I would have loved to have a chance to see some of the produce at The Boys, but there's always next time.

Also next time? We'll have to try one of The Girls' famous root beer floats at the soda fountain counter. I would have loved to share pictures of it, but it was crowded and I didn't want to push Turtle too hard.

Today's the last day for our Giveaway from Her Royal Yarness! Be sure to check it out and get your entry in!

{ boo at the zoo }

I love when local attractions do themed events for the holidays.

The Palm Beach Zoo hosted a great daytime (and nighttime) offering for patrons this month.

Boo at the Zoo.

For the price of a regular admission, visitors got to not only see the regular zoo fare, but also got to partake in trick or treating at stations set up throughout the zoo, participate in costume contests, rock out to a dj, and paint pumpkins.

Among other things.

Like riding the zebra on the carousel,

checking out the peacocks,

or posing with pumpkins.

He even got his very first "ink." It's an airbrush tattoo of a snake.

He selected the design, the color (pink) and said yes to glitter.

I mean, who wouldn't say yes to glitter?

He collected some candy and fun treats, and pretty much exhausted himself with all the fun.

Be sure to check it out if you live in the area. I'm sure the nighttime version of the event is even more fun, too!

(There's just one more day to enter our Her Royal Yarness Giveaway for a Miss Piggy or Roar knitted hat!)

{ a family affair }

This past week, Turtle and I took a trip to visit my grandparents and aunt (his great-grandparents and great-aunt). We were going to be in the area for one of my best friends' son's first birthday parties, and thought we would take advantage of the proximity to visit.

Turtle loved it.

From the minute he marched in the front door, dragging my rolling suitcase, as if he owned the place, to the moment we left, he seemed to have a grand time.

We went on a few excursions, including the local zoo and an amazing pumpkin patch, and also spent some time at the house and the park.

He adored showing off - his hilarious (yes, I'm biased) commentary, his ability to go on the big boy potty, and his counting.

And while he is normally very cautious about unfamiliar situations, he leaped right in to this one.

Which was nice to see.

I was concerned for his sleeping. When he was in his crib, it was difficult to travel because he wouldn't really sleep anywhere else. Leading to crankiness for him and for us. Once again, he surprised me. He did a great job sleeping at night. He did need someone to lay down with him until he dozed off (and on two nights, my aunt was the one who indulged him), but that was all he needed. Napping was out, but hey. Baby steps, right?

And he did wonderfully with a strange potty, too. No accidents, the entire time. How great is that?

I'll go into specifics later in the week, but for now, just some pictures from around the house.

On the see-saw at the park in my grandparents' community. He loved it.

Pensive Turtle.

Teaching Pop all about Mickey Mouse. It's an important lesson.

Saying goodbye to Nanie. Big hugs all around.

We had a wonderful, wonderful time. I'm so glad we were able to spend a few days.

Don't forget, you still have time to enter the Her Royal Yarness Giveaway. Two winners will be announced on Friday!

{ friends and fried oreos }

Truly, a match made in heaven. Wouldn't you agree?

And while we do try to eat our daily recommended servings of fruits and veggies, when we hit the local festivals and fairs (and darn it, there are a few of them), we have to indulge in a few midway delicacies.

It's a festival law. Or something.

And I always heed festival laws.

Joking aside, I love fairs and festivals. There's something so comforting about wandering through tented vendors and food stalls, admiring handicrafts, getting ideas for DIY projects and, best of all, catching up with some wonderful friends.

Turtle got some hugs, too. Melt.

We visited the fire truck towards the back of the venue, and the kids just loved it.

On our way out, we bumped into some friends who were dining on these beauties. If you have never enjoyed the sensation of oreos dipped in batter and deep fried, you are missing out.

MacGyver's sweet tooth wasn't quite satisfied by his taste, so we stopped for more to take home. However, rather than more fried oreos, or even a fried Snickers bar, the vendor talked us into the chocolate-covered key lime pie. Frozen. Creamy. Home. Made. The best in the state, he said.

We split it. Between the three of us. Perhaps we should have gotten our own. Maybe.

{ the pumpkin patch }

Sunday morning, we woke up with a goal. To get cider and donuts and then head off to the local pumpkin patch for our annual gourds.

Of course, where we live, the closest thing to cider and donuts require trips to both the grocery store and the local Dunkin. And even then, you can't get cider donuts. You can get pumpkin.

Which Turtle, inexplicably, loved. He called it "eating Halloween."

Did you swoon of cuteness? I did.

I also had to settle for hot chocolate. I did so with good grace, even though it's not quite the same.

So fortified, we set off to the patch.

Pumpkin picking is serious business.

First, we have to mull over our choices while on a hayride.

After all. These pumpkins are going to be carved. And painted. And used for decor through the end of the month. So it's important to spend some time in thought. They have to be juuuuust right.

Ready?

And break!

Eenie. Meenie. Miney. Mo.

Comparing notes with a friend.

We came home with four. Two behemoths for carving and two smaller ones for painting.

And then? Then it was time to nap.

Pumpkin Picking is exhausting.

Don't forget. There's only one more day to enter this great Morning Star Loft giveaway for a short-sleeved Lady Gaga or The Beatles onesie or toddler shirt! Enter now!
